Bioethics

Prompt: What is the role of ethics in scientific-research? How can the pursuit of knowledge be dangerous? Just because technology exists, should it always be acted upon?

Ethics should play an integral role in scientific research, but sadly ethics often have no bearing on the advancements of science. I and many others believe that there is a distinctive right and wrong involving technological and scientific advancements. Just because something is scientifically possible does not mean that it is right to proceed. The majority of the world would say that science and the search for truth is more important than morals, but that is false. Most everything in life has ethics or a moral code of some sort, so why would humanity exclude science from that category? All the recent breakthroughs in genetic engineering and the cloning of humans shows that ethics need to play a role in the decision making regarding these two topics.

The pursuit of knowledge can be very dangerous because humanity begins to think they are gaining more control over life itself. People begin to tamper with things that they are not meant to touch, and humans start playing creator thinking they should control what type of people enter and do not enter the world. Knowledge often times leads to healing and good things, but it also leads mankind down an unhealthy dark path.

Advancements that are discovered should not always be acted upon. It is understandable that if someone found a cure for cancer then they would want to share that with the world, but what if the cost was the murder of another to save a life? It would not truly be beneficial to mankind if these advancements send us to a darker destiny that ends in us trying to control all that happens on earth. That is not our job, but belongs to God and God alone.
